The mind is a vast place, I like to think of it as its own universe filled with memories and experiences that can translate to wondrous stories. It’s my very own movie theater where the best shows are scheduled when I fall asleep and dream. That moment when I close my eyes, take a deep breath and go deep into the bowels of the human psyche, I find myself in distant worlds far beyond the grasp of reality. Some nights I’m a secret agent working to protect a utopian society, or an officer of the Chinese empire looking for a weapon that will end ragnarok. But the ones that really leave a mark on me are the nightmares that take me to hellish landscapes with grotesque monsters chasing me, hurting me, killing me. I find a weird sense of escapism in these dark worlds, no matter how scary and disturbing they may seem it’s no worse than the reality that we live in today.
The purpose of my collection is to express the sadness inside each one of us that seek better places other than the world we live in. We all need a sense of escapism which can be found in works that are surreal and macabre. I drew inspiration from the likes of dystopian-surrealist painter, Zdzislaw Beksinski, and mangaka Junji Ito to create prints that tell stories of strife and internal struggle. Utilizing various forms of pleat work and embroidery to create texture that will elevate simple but clean silhouettes.
